Why Software Updates Are Important

Software updates are improvements, fixes, or new features added to a computer program, device, or mobile app after its initial release. They are typically delivered automatically through the internet or manually through downloadable files, depending on the software’s settings and requirements.

Security: Regular updates can close vulnerabilities that let cyberattackers hack into your devices and steal your information. This is why it’s important to update your software regularly, especially when you get notified of updates.

Performance: Software updates can improve the speed and performance of a device or app. They can also add new tools to make your device or app more fun and useful. For example, the latest iOS 18.1 update on iPhones includes smarter Siri features and better battery life.

Updates can improve a device’s compatibility with other software and systems. However, it’s important to test a software update before installing it on all your devices (see our blog post on updating without breaking things).

If a device or software stops being updated by its manufacturer, it’s often considered out of support and should be replaced. This is why many users set a calendar reminder to check for updates or install updates as soon as they’re available.

The NCSC recommends setting a recurring reminder on your calendar to check for and install software updates. You should also ensure that your organisation’s IT policies and processes are in place to keep all software up to date (including updates for third-party apps). This helps reduce the risk of attack and helps your business meet its compliance or operational security standards.
