In the long term, technology may transform what it means to be human but in the short term, the world will still be dominated by nation-states. By 2030, the US will probably retain a sphere of influence in Europe and central Asia but that sphere will be increasingly challenged by the large, educated populations of Poland, Turkey, Brazil and Russia. The great power balance will be influenced by what happens in the vortex of instability that stretches from Africa to central Asia.

News organisations will face continued attacks from hostile politicians and economic headwinds while battling to protect their intellectual property against rapacious AI-driven platforms. They will also have to contend with changing search algorithms that favour partisan personalities and content over traditional journalism. In addition, rising social unrest could fuel protests and strikes that are difficult to predict. For example, a spike in gas prices, a resurgence of a particular religion or the passage of a new law might all trigger unrest. As a result, riots and demonstrations are likely to become more common and may include more violence.
